What is Implant Dentistry?

Dental implants enable dentists to create healthy, attractive smiles in an innovative way. Used to replace one or more missing teeth, dental implants are another alternative to conventional bridges and dentures.

In essence, dental implants look and act like natural teeth. Dental implant restoration consists of a bio-compatible titanium screw and post, topped by dental crown, bridge or dentures. The dental implant is surgically connected into the jawbone, replacing the natural tooth root.

In a few months, the dental implant securely attaches to the bone (through a process called “osseointegration”), allowing it to withstand the force of biting and chewing, just like a healthy, natural tooth.

Common indications for dental implant therapy are:

• Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth
• Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by shifting of teeth into a missing tooth space
• Restore patient’s confident smile
• Restore chewing, speech, and digestion
• Restore or enhance facial tissue
• Support a bridge or denture by making them more secure and comfortable

The primary limiting factor in implant dentistry is the amount of bone available to receive and support the dental implant. If it’s determined that a patient does not have enough bone to support a dental implant restoration, bone grafting procedures are an option. Heavy smoking and other medical conditions may rule out the use of implant dentistry.
